Shellfishing

There's perhaps nothing more relaxing than an early morning's jaunt to the local shellfish beds to dig for tasty critters hiding in the mud flats. Oysters, quahogs, clams--the very thought of them makes our lips smack with images of a steaming bowl of chowder or a nice stuffed quahog. Yum!

Regarding all shellfish, you need to consult the local town hall for restrictions and permits. Regulations and minimum-size requirements can be a little confusing at first. The minimum size of a good oyster is one with a certain shell diameter (currently 3 inches), while a minimum quahog size is measured in shell thickness (1 inch). Conch is measured in shell width (2 inches), and sea scallops must meet a certain shell height (3 inches).

Each town has its own restrictions in terms of possession limits. You'll also want to find out which beds are open and which are closed and what types of shellfish are available for the taking. Contact the local Town Hall for local regulations and limits. (See the list of town halls in our Overview chapter.) We find that when the rules are followed the chowder tastes a whole lot better!

Sportfishing Charters

While shore fishing is a big attraction on Cape Cod, to get a shot at some of the bigger fish, namely tuna, you need to head to sea. It also helps to heed the guidance of someone that knows the area and also knows current regulations.

That's why a fishing charter is a great idea--whether you're looking for a family activity or an afternoon of competitive fishing among friends, you'll be able to find a boat and captain to accommodate you and your party.

Most charters include bait and equipment and provide some instruction for beginners. Some will also rent you a rod and reel for a nominal fee. However, most are not staffed to provide supervision for children, so if you're coming as a family you'll need to be the one to help your young anglers handle their rods and reels (especially when the big ones start biting!).

You will also find that boats vary greatly in size. Most small group charters take a maximum of six guests, and in several cases the captain will charge you the full rate even if there are less than six in your party, or he will at least try to pair you with other folks so that he has a full boat. The larger-party boats vary greatly in the number of people they can take. Larger boats generally are less expensive per person, but you don't get the individual attention you receive on a small charter. Depending on the boat's size, the number of passengers is set by Coast Guard regulations and boat captains cannot bend the rules for you.

Most of the common game fish are found within an hour's ride from a Cape port. Many are found considerably closer and, of these, some can be taken from skiff or shore. But whatever fish you wish to chase, there are experienced charter skippers who can guide you. Below is a list of recommendations.
