Popular with families, retirees, and especially fishermen, the Bay Motor Inn offers 17 clean units that include poolside, efficiency, and cottage units. According to Fred, the most popular choice of guests are the Cape "Coddages," freestanding cottage units complete with cable TV, air-conditioning, phones, and tiled bathrooms. You'll be close to a wide assortment of attractions and restaurants or you can simply spend the day lounging by the wheelchair-accessible pool, playing tennis at the nearby courts, or just watching the boat traffic on the canal. Pets are allowed, but Fred and Irene ask that guests do not leave dogs unattended during the day (just down the road is veterinary service that will watch your pet for a small fee). The Bay Motor Inn is open from April 1 to Nov. 1.

Dan'l Webster Inn
$$$-$$$$ • 149 Main St., Sandwich• (508) 888-3622, (800) 444-3566• www.danlwebsterinn.com

One of the Upper Cape's most distinguished facilities, the Dan'l Webster Inn offers four dining rooms--the Webster Room, the Heritage Room, the Morgan Room and the Conservatory (see our Restaurants chapter)-- an English-style tavern, a gift shop, and an outdoor swimming pool, all set in the midst of the historic and beautiful Sandwich Village. This Colonial inn is a reproduction of the original tavern, built in 1692, that served as a parsonage and Patriot headquarters during the Revolutionary War. It was patronized by statesman Daniel Webster during the town's mid-19th century heyday, hence its name.

Guests have their choice of guest rooms and suites at the inn or in two older homes, the Fessenden House on the property and the Quince Tree Inn 1 block away. Furnishings throughout are antiques or period reproductions. Dan'l Webster Inn offers many types of accommodations ranging in style from the formally elegant Daniel Webster Suite with a fireplace and massive canopied bed to double-bed rooms in the Jarves Wing. All guest rooms are individually decorated and feature private baths; some have a Jacuzzi. Pampering includes fresh flowers, chocolates, turned-down beds, and bottled water in the rooms. While staying here, you are within strolling distance of Sandwich's many museums and other historic attractions, including the Hoxie House and the Grist Mill on Shawme Pond. The Dan'l Webster Inn is open year-round. On your way to the Cape, you may want to check out the Dan'l Webster's sister establishment, the John Carver Inn in Plymouth at 25 Summer St., (800) 274-1620 or (508) 746-7100.
