Triathlons, Biathlons, and Walkathons

Upper Cape

Coast Guard Air Station Duathlon

Held at Camp Edwards Recreational Center, Massachusetts Military Reservation over Memorial Day weekend, this race features a 2-mile run, 12-mile bike race, and a a 2-mile run. The entry fee is $40.

Carolyn Miller Tri-Event

This annual race provides athletes with the opportunity to celebrate the spirit of Carolyn Miller, a talented thirty-three year old woman killed in a tragic accident on the Sagamore Bridge in 1995. The event consists of Carolyn's three favorite sports and features a 6.2 mile in-line skate (helmets and wrist guards are mandatory for the skate), a 3.1-mile run, and an 11.5-mile bike race (helmets mandatory). The individual triathlete fee is $30. You can also put a 3-person team together; the team fee is $75. Proceeds benefit the Carolyn Miller Scholarship Fund, which supports deserving high school senior women who characterize Carolyn's passion for success.

March of Dimes WalkAmerica

The March of Dimes holds two walkathons, one in Hyannis in late April and another in Falmouth in mid-May. The Hyannis walkathon is a 5-mile scenic walk that begins at the National Guard Armory. The Falmouth event begins at Casino by the Sea and usually follows part of the Falmouth Road Race route. WalkAmerica, begun in 1972, was the first walking event in the nation. The walks in 1999 raised $77,000 combined.

The annual Falmouth Sprint has been run since 1991. The race, staged alongside Vineyard Sound and run through Falmouth Heights is a .33-mile swim, 9-mile bike, and 3.1-mile run. The first 4 miles of the bike stage hugs the ocean, and the 3.1-mile run takes you along the prestigious Falmouth Road Race course. The event, part of the New England Triathlon Tour, takes place in late July. The entry fee is $35 for ages 10 to 17 and $50 for pros and those over 18.

Mid-Cape

Start the season fast at Cape Cod's longest-established triathlon in early June. Staged from beautiful Craigville Beach, this is the ideal race for athletes of every ability. It begins with a .25-mile ocean swim in Nantucket Sound, continues as a scenic 10-mile bike loop through Centerville and Osterville, and ends with a 3.5-mile run through the quiet neighborhoods of Centerville village. Sprint I is held in mid-June while Sprint II takes place in early September. The entry fee ranges from $35 for those ages 10 to 17; the pro fee is $50; it's also $50 for those over 18.

Lower Cape

Harwich Cranberry Festival Bridge to Bridge Swim and Run

This biathlon begins with a .8-mile swim from Wixon dock on the Herring River to the town dock at Mass. Rt. 28. It is then followed by a 3.1-mile run from the town dock to Pleasant Road Beach. This event is usually held on a weekend in mid-August, but it depends largely on the tides. Proceeds go to the "We Love Our Kids" program.

Soccer

Cape Cod Crusaders

Professional soccer has come to Cape Cod with the Cape Cod Crusaders. All home games are played at Dennis-Yarmouth High School. (Take U.S. Rt. 6 to exit 8, take your first right off the ramp, then go straight for 1.5 miles; the stadium is on your left).

Out of some 90 professional teams of the United System of Independent Soccer Leagues throughout the country, the Crusaders are one of only six New England teams. The team plays two dozen games each summer season. There's usually at least one game held each weekend from April to mid-August. Game time is 7:30 PM. For the other half of the games they travel to New Jersey, New York, and as far south as North Carolina for matches. The season concludes with national championships on Labor Day Weekend. The Crusaders, of the Pro League, have participated in post-season play two of the past three years.

Players come from as far away as Ireland and England, while others hail from nearby New England colleges. Games can draw up to 2,000 spectators. Ticket prices are $8 for adults and $5 for children younger than 12. Tickets are also sold in packages if you know that you will be attending 3 or more games during the season. Cape Cod Soccer League

During the months of June and July the amateur Cape Cod Soccer League is in action with eight teams playing around the Cape. Teams include such good ol' Cape Cod names as Chatham Fog and Harwich Hurricanes.

Massachusetts Maritime Academy

During September and October you can catch college soccer games at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Buzzards Bay. The Mass Maritime Buccaneers compete against some 20 local colleges and are members of the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference. To watch the Bucs in action, contact the academy for information on upcoming matches.

Softball

Any spring or summer evening, or weekend morning for that matter, you can find a men's or coed softball game at a field nearby.

Cape Senior Softball Classic

For a special treat, check out the Cape Cod Old Timers League in the Mid- and Lower Cape towns. The season runs from early May to the Sunday before Labor Day. The league wraps up with the annual Cape Senior Softball Classic, a three-day tournament in early September. This event features surprisingly entertaining softball from these players 55 years and older. Teams come from as far away as Connecticut and New Hampshire, and there are divisions for 65 and 70-plus.

Tennis

As with golf, it is impossible to list all the Cape's tennis tournaments. It is estimated that the Cape's many private and public tennis courts hold in excess of 100 tournaments, 30 of which are played at Mid-Cape Racquet Club in South Yarmouth. Imagine the number of serves we're talking about! Below is a sampling of the events, starting off with the granddaddy of all tennis events on Cape.

Upper Cape

Tennis Doubles Cancer Tournament

This is a premier doubles tournament to benefit the American Cancer Society. Held in early May, this is a locals' tune up for the summer tourneys. Entry fee is $20 per player.

Mid-Cape

Cape Cod Community College Open

Held over a two-week period during the second and third weeks of July, this tennis tournament at the college features men's and women's singles and doubles matches. Junior and adult divisions are based on age, not experience. There is also a wheelchair division. Matches typically take place between Wednesday and Sunday over the two-week period.

Mid-Cape Open

These matches take place over a two-week period in July at various locations around the Cape and feature singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Semifinals and finals are held at the Mid-Cape Racquet Club. The Open is great fun for competitive as well as club players. There are divisions for all ages and skills levels. The entry fee for adult singles is $20, for adult doubles it's $30, and for junior singles (12-, 14-, 16-, and 18-year divisions) it's $20.

Lower Cape

Lower Cape Open

In this August tournament, players younger than 11 to older than 70 battle it out in junior, men's, women's, and seniors divisions at Eldredge Park in Orleans and on private courts located throughout Orleans. Highly competitive tennis buffs come from all over New England representing college level through ranked adults. There are singles and doubles (men's, ladies, and mixed) competitions. The entry fee for singles is $20; for doubles teams it's $50.

Provincetown Tennis Club Year-Rounders Tournament

Started more than 20 years ago as a tournament for local year-rounders, the tournament has expanded to include seasonal residents as well as players from outside of Provincetown. The fun begins in mid-June with men's and women's singles, doubles and mixed doubles, culminating in the finals held on the July 4 weekend. The event sponsors singles, doubles and mixed-doubles divisions. The entry fee is $17 for singles, $20 for doubles.
